Crowing
Hi, we don't actually have chickens yet, but I've been reading about them, planning coops, chicken tractors, and thinking through many of the aspects of raising chickens for at least the last 20 years. I've previously raised rabbits (a long time ago), and backyard beef steers more recently. The place where I raised beef actually had a deed restriction against poultry, so we couldn't consider chickens until we moved just before Covid-19 restrictions.
I'm about to start an incubator with my granddaughter, then brood and ultimately keep a few chickens for eggs. I'm starting from the ground up, but I've been thinking for a while! I don't have a favorite breed, yet. We are starting with eggs from the farm down the street. They raise organically and have a rooster covering all their separate flocks. I'll see what eggs I get, which eggs make it through incubation, and then hopefully, have a good yield of pullets when they mature. I'll know then which breeds I have, and which ones of those do the best for me.
Otherwise, I'm a disabled veteran, I have a kidney transplant (7 years so far) and a few other related medical problems. I have been married almost 40 years and have two adult daughters that are both married and one granddaughter. I've known about BYC for many years, but finally joined since I am actually about to get chickens!
