Hello. I'm a new member and absolutely love the wealth of information I find on this site, I've been coming here for advice for years, but just officially joined. I'm in North Western Ontario so it's very, very cold here right now. We currently have 18 chickens (this morning we started out with 23 but our neighbour's dog got into our coop and took out 4!!! It was very sad). We have Easter Eggers, Americaunas, barred rock, and a couple of barnyard mixes that we hatched ourselves over the past couple of years, and some Berg's browns that we took from friends when they moved away. This spring I plan to hatch some wyandottes, bantam cochins, and some brahma's. I love the egg colours (brown, white, pink, blue, and green), and the funny personalities that we have. I'm looking forward to this spring when they'll be free ranging again. Thanks for having me!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frowGlad you joined.
Sorry for your losses.
How is your coop secured that the dog broke in?
Thank you. It was a series of unfortunate events this morning. My kid accidentally left the coop door ajar, and the neighbour who doesn’t have a dog had a houseguest who brought one who accidentally snuck out on her. On a normal day this isn’t an issue, but certainly gives us reason to double up our defences so that there isn’t a next time. We usually let our chickens free range but are thinking a run in front of the coop is a good idea this spring in case strange dogs ever get curious again and so that they can be locked up when we’re not able to keep a close eye.
