I'm a bit rubbish at talking about myself so I'll do the handy template thing. :)

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am totally new to chickens! Ever since I was a little girl I've wanted chickens and throughout the years I've houseminded a few places with chooks. Now I'm thrilled to have my own and dusted off the tall stack of chook books I've collected over the years. We've had our original chooks for about a month now.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

We have 4 hens and a rooster.

(3) What breeds do you have?

Our rooster, Gus, is a silver sussex. Gretel is the top hen and is a bantam. Esme and Martha are both ISA browns and we're just introducing Doris who's a LSW x speckled sussex.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

Watching them dig over the mulch around our gardens and fruit trees; can anyone ever stay stressed when watching the girls playing keepie off with a worm? I'm an avid gardener and having all this free fertilizer for the garden plus some in-house pest control is fantastic. The eggs are just a very nice bonus.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I garden a lot - especially edibles of which we have plenty all year round in the tropics. We also love fishing and camping.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I live on a 5 acre block which we are starting to plant out and build on with my partner. No kids but one very spoilt dog who is scared of/curious about these new feathered sisters and brother. She is definitely loving all the extra eggs! I'm a sustainability teacher at a local primary school so also look after the farm and our school goats and chickens.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

Google! Gus is being extremely aggressive towards our new girl, Doris, and instigating the rest of the girls to do the same. We had Doris in a separate pen and he kept slamming up against the dividing wire to try and get at her. They all free range together. Last night when they all went to bed I put Gus in the separate pen instead with the aim of keeping him there for a week or so. With him out of the way the girls are all fine together beside the odd peck. All based on info from this forum. I've been avidly poring through the forums ever since!

Hello and welcome to Backyard Chickens! :welcome

Chickens can be tough on newcomers, roosters or cockerels especially can be aggressive. It is optimal to keep them separated but close together to where they may interact for about a month. Once they are all together you should keep roosting poles, branches, etc.. in reach for the victim to escape the others. The hens should definitely be ok with her but I would be more concerned about the rooster.

Hi and welcome to BYC and congrats on your birds.
