To me Sonoma County is Central CA. I live in Siskiyou County, about half an hour south of the Oregon border. It's pretty mountainous here, so we do have bears ... lots of them. And most of them have no compunctions against wandering into town and raiding garbage cans, let alone killing a few chickens on a remote ranch.Hi Amy! Sorry about the job loss, but what a great opportunity to get chickens! I know what you mean about being treated like a kid. My sister and I used to joke that we sometimes felt 12 around our mom, even into our 40s! Hard to break away from old habits!
There is a great thread for your area California - Northern. Come on by and say hi. There are lots of really nice folks and maybe someone local has a good recommendation for fencing (although I don't know of anyone who has to deal with bears!).![]()
Most chickens are happier if they can free range, but you always take a risk. Having a good guard rooster can help. Night time seems to be the most active time for chicken-eaters, so a secure coop to lock them in at night is essential.
Hope to see you on the threads!

...Yeah.... a prince. He's a spoiled prince then. He detests being handled. He detests having his hens handled. Fortunately, he's not a pecker, just a squawker and flutterer. Noisy little brat. That's him in my Avi by the way. He's a handsome fella. There was quite a bit of discussion at the start of the thread as to what constitutes Northern CA! I've always thought of San Jose as the dividing line and consider where I live the North Bay Area. You are definitely in northern Northern CA!Mostly I subscribe to the thread because the wonderful people are a great support system and the fact that it's really an active thread. Folks from Redding area, gold country, north coast, Bay Area, and all over. You'd be more than welcome and we'd love to hear bear stories! Any roo that can survive a bear attack, let alone two attacks, should have a home for life!!! Yours sounds like a prince!![]()
