(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm fairly new to chickens, I've had them about 3 months. I've wanted chickens for a long time, but don't live in the "perfect" area for them. We plan on making a cross country move within the next 1-2 years, but I couldn't hold back on getting chickens any longer!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
45 and counting...
(3) What breeds do you have?
Ameracaunas, Barnevelders, Bielefelders, Cochins, Cream legbars, Crevecoeurs, Gold Deathlayers, Isbars, Lavender Wyandottes, Light sussex, Black copper marans, Orloffs, Orpingtons, Pita Pintas, Schijndelaars, and Shetland Hens.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love watching them, they're more entertaining than any TV show!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Reef aquariums, reptiles, gardening
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I'm married with 3 kids, ages 8 months, 3, and 4.5. They are a full time job! Before being a stay at home mom, I was (still am) a registered dietitian and I worked in a hospital setting as well as in a state mental health facility. Animals have always been my passion. I was discouraged from veterinary school because I couldn't stand working with "boring" cats and dogs and always wanted to work with exotics only, which as the time wasn't very common. I ended up pursing a career in nutrition, which is great, but not my life calling. I may work towards a degree in animal nutrition when my children are a bit older.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Google! I would have joined sooner if every screen name I though of hadn't already been taken lol.
