Thanks for all the good advice. I am definitely concerned for the chicken's safety now. Our coop was built by an experienced farmer/contractor. It's an 8' x 4' coop/chicken tractor. He reinforced the sides of the run with heavy wire, and it seems very solid except for the lack of a door underneath the roost where the ladder is. I'm not sure how to put a door on the opening though. I might take measurements of the area and a picture to Home Depot and see if one of the workers could advise me how to do it.
