Hello all. I've been wanting to get into chickens for awhile now. I've been lurking on this site for long enough I guess. I live in North-Central Ohio, am married with one daughter.
As I hinted above, I have no experience with chickens and only know a couple people that keep them. I think I'm within a week or two of getting my first birds. I need to check in with my zoning inspector to make sure I can legally have them, but I can't imagine it'll be a problem. I've got a nice shed I can convert to a coop in relatively little time. We have about 1-1/2 acres for them to pick at.
I think I've settled on Buckeyes for my first birds, if I can find some. I'm going to try to start out with around 15 birds, hopefully around 12 hens and 2 or 3 roosters. We're interested in the eggs. My wife will want no part of us slaughtering our chickens, and if I did, I really couldn't see her even eating the meat.
I'm sure I'll have lots of questions along the way. This site is a great resource so far. I've read a lot in the forums and the members' pages.
Thanks for the help so far.
