We just got 6 babies tonight, and I'm sure we'll need lots of advice! Thanks a bunch!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. What kind of chicks did you get?

Rhode Island Red. They are still really small. We do have a heat lamp on them, but I'm kind of worried that they'll get too warm. How can I tell?

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You might like to check out the BYC Learning Center, lots of good articles on all aspects of chicken keeping you'll find useful with your new flock. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center nice one on keeping the chicks the first few weeks https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/raising-your-baby-chicks Chicks that are too hot tend to be as far away from the light as they can be, they pant, they often tend to stay apart from each other in stead of bunching up, they may cheep a lot. The brooder should have warmer and cooler spots so they chicks can warm up or cool off as they need to, the first week it should be 95* under the light and you can drop that 5* every week... be careful the whole brooder is not overheating, especially if you are using something like a plastic tote... be sure there is plenty of ventilation.

Thanks for the advice! They are asleep now, and seem pretty content. We've had all kinds of baby animals but these chicks just seem so fragile, and I don't want to accidentally hurt them.

X2 on Kelsie2290s advice. By the end of the 6th week they should be fully feathered and you won't have to worry about the temperature any longer.

They are all doing well this morning! I went In to check and they were sleeping. I changed the water and they started running around. So sweet!

Welcome to chicks and BYC!

Sounds like you've just discovered the joy of chicken tv, it's the best show around. It's fun seeing them grow and watching their personalities come out.

Have a good time with them and if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
