You might like to check out the BYC Learning Center, lots of good articles on all aspects of chicken keeping you'll find useful with your new flock. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center nice one on keeping the chicks the first few weeks https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/raising-your-baby-chicks Chicks that are too hot tend to be as far away from the light as they can be, they pant, they often tend to stay apart from each other in stead of bunching up, they may cheep a lot. The brooder should have warmer and cooler spots so they chicks can warm up or cool off as they need to, the first week it should be 95* under the light and you can drop that 5* every week... be careful the whole brooder is not overheating, especially if you are using something like a plastic tote... be sure there is plenty of ventilation.Rhode Island Red. They are still really small. We do have a heat lamp on them, but I'm kind of worried that they'll get too warm. How can I tell?
