Hi my name is Craig and I am a recent PNW transplant from California. We moved to Olympia/Tumwater 2 years ago and just bought a home in Tenino. We have about an acre and are currently planning our greenhouse/chicken coop and plan to house 10-15 hens. I've been checking out this website for about a month now to get tips/ideas for the best layout for my chickens and It's been an awesome resource.

There is already a 12x12 concrete slab towards the back of our property in a half shaded area that I plan on creating my greenhouse coop on. And I am going to have a mixed flock of Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rock and a couple Slikies (because the kids think they look awesome.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Good choice of breeds. Sillkies are great favorites with kids, and tend to make excellent broody mothers. Which means when they feel broody they will sit on eggs, hatch them, and teach their offspring how to be chickens. Much easier than hovering around a finicky incubator. You can buy any breed of fertile eggs and slip them under a broody hen.
