Thank you ALL for making me feel so welcome!
Marty1876, after reading your footer notes (probably not what they're called, but I hope someone will correct me on my terminology), I'm wondering if there is any breed of bird you don't have?
So nice to hear from those of you who live in the southern states too - one of my sisters lives in South Carolina, so I have a soft spot for the area.
... and
to all of you who are a little closer to our home (Michigan, Ohio, and of course Windsor).
... and Melody Nye, thank you for your advice re: Ameraucanas. They were on the list because they fit most of our criteria, plus they lay those lovely coloured eggs, which appealed to my DH. But hey, if they're nasty to newcomers, they don't make the cut as a flock candidate. Glad you told me ahead of time.
Cheers!
