... and Melody Nye, thank you for your advice re: Ameraucanas. They were on the list because they fit most of our criteria, plus they lay those lovely coloured eggs, which appealed to my DH. But hey, if they're nasty to newcomers, they don't make the cut as a flock candidate. Glad you told me ahead of time.

I hope I won't annoy you too much with my questions. I'm new to being part of a forum too, so I need to learn how to get around here as well. First question, not really chicken-related: I haven't figured out yet how to add a signature to my posts. How is that done?
 
Hi, Greymane. We live in South eastern Ontario, not far from Ottawa, and close enough to pop over to NY state for a visit now and then, just as far as Ogdensburg or Massena, though. I have notmade it to the Finger Lakes area yet.
