Hey everyone! We have been lurking for a few months, getting our first chickens ever a couple of months ago. I must say, we learned a LOT to help with these little ones.
We started out with four Partridge Rock Bantams, three hens and a roo. Everyone was happily laying eggs, living in their brand new chicken tractor... Then Mrs. cluck went broody. We let her set on three eggs. Lost Henny, who was not laying as much as the other two, but she was a lovey dovey, and was our 'show' chicken.... She got taken by a fox...GRrrr. Then of course Penny decided she wanted to be a mommy too. Oh my!!! Good thing these guys are pets/employees. (-we have imparted to the cats we do NOT eat the fellow employees on the farm...).
So, an update in the few months we have had them, we have moved from trying a few chickens to 'see how it goes' with my 12 year old daughter.....
To two hens, one roo, one chick named Frankie (no idea if boy or girl) three eggs under Penny due tomorrow, three in the incubator (yes we bought a small incubator too...sigh) due Wednesday, and a build on a spacious all season Chicken Castle!!!!!
OMG this is getting out of control!!!!! But having these chickies is so neat!

Welcome from Manitoba. You have an early case of the dreaded Chicken Math disease. I know. I have an advanced case. Started with 5 hens and a roo that were free. Too many to count now!

Yup. I am in fear!!! A couple of friends really like our chickens. Think they are pretty. So now, my daughter is thinking about getting into the breeding business. Whaaaaa!? Do don't we just start out looking for some eggs, and maybe a few chicks to keep the flock going???
Darn you! CHICKEN MATH!!!

Just did a quick count of mine and came up with 46 adults, 118 chicks hatched this year, 39 ducks, 4 geese, 15 guineas and 6 rabbits ( sold 13) and thats all in just over 2 years of having fowl. Oh and eggs in the incubator set to hatch July 3. And i am getting Chantecler chicks to add to my flock in 2 weeks. 60 are meat chickens that will be processed in Oct though and a bunch of roos for meat also.

Wow. I'm in trouble.:D
Pony math isn't as bad. Got one horse. Lonely. Two so that one has company. Three so when you take one out the other isn't lonely....four....because if you ride with a friend, the third horse is alone. Eek!! Actually, the fourth is a schooling pony, so it is all good. Ran out of room in the barn.
So I am kinda hoping, the size of the chicken castle will keep our flock down to a dull roar...
How many did you start out with again??? Yikes! LOL:yiipchick

I want my husband to build a chicken palace but so far he is resisting.
I would really like peafowl next year!

Thanks everyone! My daughter and I are building most of it. Honey will offer his help if needed. I think it's important for a girl to learn to swing a hammer....and use cool power tools!

I have found BYC so helpful in starting up with our chickie poos. They seem pretty happy and healthy. So far so good! Muddling our way through just like everyone else.
I must be on this site 6X a day looking for info from candling to chick raising, to keeping our hens and roo happy. What an awesome group of helpful and supportive people!! Finally, we decided no more lurking. The chickens are staying. Named, cuddled, and now full time ' employees' on our farm. (Bug and egg duty)
