HeT there,
my wife and i have been raising chickens (cuckoo marans, silver laced wyandottes, rhode island reds, red stars) and ducks (kakhi kampbell, cayuga) for about 10 months. We started with 20 chicks and 5 little ducks, we have lost one chicken and 2 ducks to a sneaky racoon that would wait till we let the birds out and then pick its breakfast. It happened 3 days in a row till we figured out what was happening. we have used this site as our primary resource since we began thinking of raising birds. We recently had a hen go broody so i started researching again and decided to finally join. There is a wealth of knowledge to be found here and we are happy to finally be a part of it. We live on orcas island in washington state and are both in our late 20's.
Ill try to post some pics later time to head to work.
Looking forward to our new chicks

Hi :welcome
Glad you could join the flock! Sorry to hear that you have lost a hen and two of your ducks to a raccoon :hugs Losing them is very sad and I know just how it feels. I hope you are able to keep them safe now as they tend to come back once they know there is a free meal on offer.

Wishing you the very best of luck with your broody if she is sitting on eggs. Looking forward to seeing your pics. Enjoy BYC :frow

Good luck with your birds.

Welcome to Backyard chickens, at least the Orcas shouldn't be a threat to your flock. Raccoons are another story, vicious killers - they will snag any body parts they can through fencing and eat them off on the spot. If they don't kill the birds they will have gruesome injuries. Raccoons are extremely intelligent, have opposable thumbs (can open any lock - save combination), climbers, diggers, opportunists and just don't give up. If you trap and kill one, more will take it's place. If they find a great buffet all their buddies and relatives will show up.
