Hello From Oregon,,,, Jersey Giant Lover

They get along with everyone ( never seen a mellower bird) I have 4 Ring-Necks with mine & one of my male Pheasants sleeps in the back corner of my roos' box ( I have never seen anything like it) But it is the safest place in the coop.
They do well in the cold, they are not great layers bout 150 eggs a year. Mine lay in the winter, I mix my own mash 20%protein for winter as there free-range is limited.
There eggs are brown to dark brown & large....."very tasty" It takes 6 to 9 MONTHS till laying age & still wont reach there peak till 12 to 14 months. This flock I have now (6 hens & a Roo) are 9 months and organic, I get 3 to 6 eggs a week.
I traded 6 of my Flemish Giant rabbits for this batch ( best trade I ever made ) they are Very Big Birds & I just love having them around.. as for an economic food producer they are not at the top of the list by far .... But for the coolest bird in the yard,, they're a 10 on my list......

PS,, It's worth buying older birds 4 to 9 months if you can find them in good health (good bone structure) ... & I wouldn't start up with a huge flock, they are a little different then most birds. They don't go broody often & they eat alot .....

Oh,, and about getting along with other chickens....I only do JGs now,,, so I really don't know, but the ranch I got them from had a lot of different chickens and seemed to be a pretty smooth outfit......

6 eggs from 6 NG hens this week so fare.
For the winter, that's good for my crew.....
I think I lucked out on my mash mix this month. I mix my own (from other feeds and bulk stuff I get ) but I never mix it exactly the same every time, it's not some secret blend.....

I just make sure it hits 20% at least with no animal byproducts..... anybody else in the West getting more eggs this year? It's suppose to be a bad winter this year.....

We hatched out 8 black jersey giants last February, 3 roo, 4 hen left. Lost one to el coyote! Then in March we hatched out 12 Blue Jersey giants from Maria Hall, 7 roo, 5 hens. My blacks at 10 months are beautiful birds, nice color and combs but a bit smaller than my blues that are younger and still growing. I have 8 roo's penned up together and they get along just fine, we have to keep them away from the the hens or the will rape them of their feathers. I also have some older b-sexlinks and RiR that get stripped of feathers from the blue roo that was with them for awhile. Black roos are fine with other hens but blues are just too big to be around smaller birds.
