About two months ago we began designing and building a coop for the 4 little chicks we bought. Now the coop is done, and we have 9 chickens.

This site has been a great resource to us throughout the entire process. We really appreciate the wide range of resources, and questions posted that echoed our own.

Since we are new to this we have questions about so many things...best litter, home made feed, gender. It goes on and on. We hope to some day our own "experienced" input to help others too.

Our flock is currently...2 golden stars, 2 black stars, 1RIR, 1 australorp, 1 barred rock, 1 mix (rid and barred), and 1 easter egger. Unfortunately we think our Audie is a roo, and maybe even our rock. So bummed.

We look forward to posting questions and getting support. Thanks for the opportunity.

We are from Oregon also and just acquired 5 Laying Hens a couple weeks ago and trying to learn how to best care for our girls. We are getting eggs which is a good thing but I want to give our girls the best care we can.

Good Luck with yours, I'll be watching your posts and hopefully learn a thing or two.

Hi and :welcome

Depending on your chickens' age, it might be hard to tell their gender, so don't give up hope yet. I had this aggressive young bird with a huge comb who grew faster than the other one... turned out to be a hen, so that was okay.

For litter most people use wood chips/shavings, but our coop has a dirt floor which we add grass clippings to, and that works nicely.
Not sure about homemade feed. Never tried that before.

Anyway, good luck and I hope you find all the info you need here. :D
