I started my back yard flock just for the eggs, but I have found so much enjoyment in the personalities of the hens too! I would have them as pets even without the eggs. I added five chicks a few ago but two got taken by something, so I secured the coop and got four more babies today...now I just have to figure out how to introduce everyone. I have three separate age groups right now.

! Pleased you joined our flock! Start with introducing them so they close contact but not physical contact - like through a fence of something. After 2 or 3 days of this I like to put them into the same coop for the first time at dark as there isn't likely to be squabbles since they can't see each other. Then, first thing in the a.m. I open up the coop right away so none of them are trapped and getting abused. I monitor them in the run to make sure none are singled out. Expect pecking order squabbles - this is normal. Should work out okay. Good luck to you!

Howdy! I am in Clackamas and am starting my chicken adventure in a few weeks.

I have ordered 5 Australorp chicks from C&L Farms in Oregon City (via Craigslist.) I have two elementary age daughters, a darling Hubby and one big yellow dog. I finally have a big yard and dream of sweet pet hens.

I am obsessed with our coop. I am on a tight (non exsistent) budget so I'm watching Craigslist for free/super cheap coops.

I love this sight and am learning all I can.

I would be very cautious buying from C&L Farms in Oregon City. We purchased three hens from him in August and all three turned out to be roosters. He has been very unapologetic about it. Either he can not tell a hen from a rooster or he is very dishonest. Either way I would not recommend him to anyone. We were new to having chickens and could not tell what he was selling us and I think he took advantage of us. Save your money and buy from a reputable seller.
