We live on 5 acres and have contemplated getting some chickens for a long time. This coronavirus was the motivation for us to become a bit more self-sufficient. We have 13 English Orpington Chicks in the kitchen and my wife is caring for them. The chicks aren't sexed and are 7 Gold Lace, 4 Black Splash, and a couple of Isabellas. JoAnn is caring for the noisy little buggers and I'm building the chicken's house. We also have a couple of registered Nigerian Dwarf Does and this year's two feeder steers. We are both retired, and I'm almost 73 and JoAnn trails me by a year. I didn't do any research into breed characteristics before buying these chicks. It didn't occur to me that some chickens are more prolific layers than others and I see that these Orpington girls are on the lower end of the production scale. I'm looking forward to finding out how little I know about chickens. Thanks for having me. Ken

Hello, Ken, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
There is a surprising amount of information to learn about chickens.
Before you get too much further on the coop, you might want to get some pointers in the Coop & Run forum so it is designed for a healthy happy flock.
