The state threads are helpful. In addition to the reasons you mention, they're a good source for local breeders, swap meets, where to find a local vet, etc. And a good place to make friends.

And remember, BYC has a forum devoted to just about anything you can imagine...hobbies, family life stories, etc. Take a look around and jump in where ever you're interested. People are very welcoming here.
