I've recently gotten three 5 month old Orpingtons and have a question. .. if they are free range chickens will they still lay eggs in the nest box or is there a chance of them laying eggs wherever they feel like?

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Yes, if you don't train your free rangers to lay in the coop, they will lay out in the field somewhere. What some people do is keep the birds in the coop until late morning so that the hens all have a chance to lay in the boxes and then let them out to free range. This helps train them to lay in the coop boxes. Although if you free range all day long, you are still going to have to go "egg hunting" as some of them will lay out in the field.

Good luck with your new chicken adventure and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X2, you have to train the chickens to lay in the coop... If they start laying outside, locking them up in the coop for a couple of days so they get used to laying in the nests again helps. Do try and make sure the nests in the coop are attractive to chickens, dark, big enough etc. I gave up trying to make them all lay in the coops. With free range birds, if they have access to a lot of places outside that they would consider a good place to hide eggs, you usually wind up with hidden nests being an ongoing problem. Some breeds are a lot worse than others. I wound up putting "fake" hidden nests outside for them with a fake egg or two and just collecting eggs out of them like normal every day (old dog houses, buckets, barrels etc) it seems to keep the stubborn girls that want to hide eggs happy and I still get the eggs and don't wind up with a bunch of surprise mixed chicks.

You've already received some good info from Kelsie2290 and TwoCrows so I'll just say Hi

Good luck coop training your birds as was suggested by the first two posters. Doing so will give them a good idea where you want the eggs and where they can go to roost at night.
