Hi my name is Sarah. I am knew to the chicken community, but I am very interested in raising chickens in my backyard. Was trying to figure out what breed would do the best in western PA? It gets really warm in summer and very cold in winter.

If you go to "where am I, where are you," you can post on your state thread and get advice tailored to your area. Chickens generally can tolerate cold much better than excessive heat. I doubt you have temps as high as Arizona and some how chickens survive that (usually).

There are a number of breeds that can tolerate hot weather, have a look round the Breeds section for a list. I have kept a large flock in Africa, some Australorp X's, RIR X's, Lohmans etc and they survived extreme heat (up to 130*F). Make sure they have cool, shady spots to hide from the sun and plenty water to drink and stand in, I found that helped a lot, letting them cool their feet. Enjoy your chicken adventures!
