Hi,

I am new to chickens as of last September and I must say I absolutely love this website!

I had been think about chickens for some time. However, once I attended the "Tour de Coops" in Portland and
won a coop in their raffle I had no choice. I had to have chickens.
I started out with three 8 week old pullets - A Buff Oprington, a Silver Wyandotte, and a Light Brahama. After a
a few months I realized that my Brahma was a rooster and took him back to the family farm and exchanged
him for a 2 year old silver gray Amercauna hen and a gold laced Polish pullet (well we think it is a pullet).
A few weeks ago something killed Speckles my Wyandotte. It was in the afternoon and she was only
in the fenced backyard for 45 minutes and I when came home there was just a pile of feathers
and a missing head. They are no longer left outside if I am not home no matter the time of day. I think
it was either a raccoon or a hawk. They do free range when I am home and my Oprington is extremely friendly and will let me pet her and pick her up. The other two are a bit skittish.
Buffy, the Oprington is now laying nice brown eggs 6 times a week. Nothing yet from the Americana, who I was told
will lay olive green eggs, and of course the Polish is still too young (and not sure of the sex yet).
I have since built a new and better coop/run which I will add to next years Tour de Coops. It is 4ft wide, 8ft long, and 7 feet high. I gave my original coop to a friend and she will soon be getting chickens and joining BYC too.
In addition to my 3 chickens, I have 3 cats which get along just fine with the chickens. They barely even look
at each other. Of course the chickens are as big as the cats so I am sure that helps.
I love Portland and like to get out to the mountains for skiing, hiking, and camping. The beach is only 90 minutes away and there are lots of outdoor concerts & festivals in the summer. The rain does get tiresome but I guess that is why it is so pretty here.
I am currently unemployed but am looking for a job as a medical assistant. I finished schooling a few months ago and will be switching careers from being a travel agent to the medical field. I am single right now but I have a great group of friends and neighbors. Looking forward to more chicken news!
