We are the proud owners of 15 White Leghorn Chickens that are part of our local FFA program. I am new to this breed and are unsure of how big they should be at this point and what the show standards are looking for. We are supposed to have them culled and a pen ready by the end of August for the fair (I have never even been to a fair least of all showed) and I want to make sure I am selecting the best birds for the pen. They were hatched on April 1st and seem to be growing slow(in my opinion)but I have never had this breed and really don't know what to look for. Any Ideas or resources would be appreciated.

You may like to start with the breeds forum above, and check out the White leghorns for description etc. It would be great if you could get a copy of their standard of perfection. Does the FFA at least tell you anything about exhibiting your birds, and if they need to be cage trained etc.?

They have given us no information. We were told where to pick the chicks up at and that we would have to be at their disposal to have the chickens tested before the fair. The kids had a quick coarse on how to raise them under a light etc... No feeding instructions, how to raise them or industry standards. We know it is supposed to be three hens, so my son wants to keep six just in case. So I am just stumbling around in the dark. I want to make this a great experience for my son so he will learn how awesome agriculture can be.
I will start with the breed forum here like you suggested and I will look up cage training and just be ready. Thank you so much.
