Hi, I just recently discovered BYC while researching how to raise chicks and decided to join after seeing all the supportive and informative forums available.
I have owned chickens previously, but this is my first time owning and raising more than one. Growing up, my siblings and I would be given a chick each and we raised them together with the help of our oldest sister. I raised two this way (one being a silke hen, and I am unsure the breed of the other one). Then last year, I was house-sitting for someone and one of their hens abandoned their nest leaving one tiny chick who had just hatched. The other hens started getting rough with it as they took over the abandoned nest, but refusing to accept the chick. I ended up taking it home with me and raising it.
It grew into a gorgeous Belgian D'uccle rooster. But unfortunately, I couldn't keep him in the area that I lived, but I was able to re-home him onto a farm where he now lives with several beautiful hens of his own.
I was already hooked by then, so after a lot of humming and harring, I decided to adopt one Beligian D'uccle and 2 silkies. They are currently being raised with my younger sisters' two Belgians.
I have always had guinea pigs for as long as I can remember, and I raised my first chick when I was around 10 or so. And I discovered then that chickens are all little individuals with their own personalities and cheeky antics. A lot of people question my choice in pets telling me they are no cat or dog, but I would say those people are just missing out. Chickens make great pets, and you get eggs from them! I just love watching them scratching around the yard, or helping them find bugs in the garden. My favourite aspect of owning them would be that it gets me outside more and that they aren't high maintenance. Also, Silkies are so cuddly.
I collect hobbies the way a lot of people collect chickens. You can never have enough. I am currently starting a herb garden. I enjoy baking, sewing, reading, and all things art.
As I have mentioned, I also own one guinea pig (his buddy died recently, and I am hesitating on buying another as he has health issues). He is just over 2 years old, is a giant fluffy teddy bear, and his name is Uno.
Fun fact: I once accidentally trained my silkie to dig wherever someone was digging.
When I had my previous silkie, every afternoon I would overturn large stones in the garden and dig up earth cockroaches for her to eat. Without realising what I was doing, I had soon trained her to associate digging with being fed. You can just imagination my older sister's shock when she was in the garden replanting small seedlings, when a silkie came racing out of nowhere to help her dig, while undoing all her hard work and sending all those little seedlings flying. Needless to say, my sister wasn't very impressed with my training.
