Hey everyone, I know I'm not quite a new member but I've never introduced myself! When I first signed up, I was living in a small college apt looking for a little farm of my own - reading over all the tidbits on byc with a longing heart!! But now I have 5 acres in the middle of nowhere aka S.W. VA lol - ready to get started! I'm hoping to start building my coop with pallets over the next week or 2 - I've scoured through the chicken coop section and have a pretty good plan - we'll see how that goes. Don't worry I'll post pix! (if it doesn't fall down before I grab the camera)
I'd like to have chickens for their eggs, to keep the bug population down a bit... and perhaps even for their meat. But from what I've read on here.. I'm not quite sure I'll be able to go through with it after having them around.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Very new to the chicken hobby but have done lots and lots of reading on byc
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
none
(3) What breeds do you have?
I like the black marans and ameraucanas but I'll probably start off with the $2 mixed stuff.. in case there's a chicken-fiending pack of dogs around here. I'm hoping to be able to free range. And I'll leave the (maybe.. perhaps..) meat chickens to the mixed breeds... haven't done lots of research on that yet, since I'm not sure I'll be able to eat it after having it as a little buddy.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I did a search on chickens on google - awhile back.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening. My long term goal - sustainable living through solar/wind power, gardening and of course chickens! We'll see how that goes as well.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I just bought a house with my significant other.. (bf doesn't quite do our relationship justice lol), I'm in college, our mortgage is reasonable enough so I don't have to work -
! I especially appreciate this since we just moved from Jersey a yr and a hlf ago... and anyone from up north knows exactly what I'm talking about. Therefore I can devote all my time to chickens and gardens. I have 2 indoor cats (one hairless.. she's quite the character), a jack russell and an australian shepherd - who I'm hoping can keep an eye on the flock... and not think they're tasty treats.
To those still reading - hope I didn't bore you with this probably too long intro. Talk to ya soon
P.S. I love this site
