Hello from SC

Welcome. I live in Mountville SC. It is between Clinton and Greenwood. I do not free range, however, my chickens have 3500 square feet of space with 1/2 inch hardware cloth walls with aprons, hardtop ceilings in half the run, and hawk netting for the other half. I decided not to free range when my roosters were out for a few minutes and a red-shoulder hawk attacked my rooster. I was close and when he saw me he fled. My rooster was fine, but that is when the hawk netting went up. Your other predators may be nocturnal hunters, but for 4-months of the year, while feeding babies, they will day hunt as well.

Thank You for that helpful information. I was sitting with the chicks just the other day and a momma black bear and two cubs from this year walked up. Gave them a "hey!" and they ran off. I see evidence of their presence every couple of days. There is a creek with a 30' waterfall that borders our property and I believe they run that creek up and down the mountain. Luckily the land is steep and the girls have plenty of mountain laurels to hide under. The bobcat I also worry about since when I see him he is stealthy sneaking around. The hawks are around as well but they have plenty of tree cover. Their coop is unfortunately windowless to protect them from predators and relies on 18 square feet of double 19 gauge hardware cloth under the eves. I feel bad closing them in at night without a view but safety first.

Here are some pictures of the "Golden Comets" and Buff Orpingtons we purchased from TSC. They first two photos are of the GC's Babs and Lucy and the last two are the BO's Baby 1 and Baby 2. Thinking all four are BO's.
