Hello from SE TX

Greetings and welcome to BYC from another in TX! So glad you joined us. The breeds you named are all good breeds. There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. I recommend at least your state as most folks won't be able to figure out where if you put anything more specific (county, town, street, etc) by itself. Old folks like me :old will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

G’Day from down under Bz1 :frow Welcome!

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Thank you folks for the welcome. Someone, I believe, asked about our set up. WE have a 10' x 20' coop... still needs nesting boxes, but we have time (little ones just turned week old and are inside near my mud room). We have a run outside of the coop that is 30' x 50' and though pic was taken previous- now has netting all above secured to post and meeting fence on all sides. Would like to get auto door... but that all extra and not needed at this point.
So, that's the set up. Sure nice to have a forum to ask in the event ?!?
We had 4H turkeys for the last 2 yrs in a row, so will be nice to have smaller birds that are a bit prettier :) and, at some point, give back (eggs) :)

I don't know where you live but I can tell you Barred rocks and Buff Orpingtons are nice, big, cold hardy, and are decent egg layers. Black stars are also known as black sex links, they are a hybrid chicken used for egg production, they are slightly smaller than the previous too and are also fairly cold hardy. EE are nice birds, they are smaller than the other 3. EE are usually hybrid Ameraucanas, they can lay eggs in a variety of colors and are also cold hardy. All 4 are good breeds of chickens to own almost anywhere.

Edit: lol I did not read the title of the thread oops
Thank you for the info.! Good stuff!

:welcome:weeHowdy and a big Welcome to our flock from a fellow Texan! Now for the answer to your question. Yes those breeds are fine for our area. Just may have to keep a watch on the Buff Orpingtons, they can get a little over heated. But a 2 liter soda bottle with frozen water in the coop or chicken run will help them cool down on them 100+ temp. days. I hope this helps you because I raise all them breeds myself. Once again glad you joined us and if you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to ask. Thanks for joining us!:jumpy:bun
Good info to know, thank you from a fellow Texan!

Thank you for the link. Must go check it out. Also, good to know re: topic of the week, thanks! Oh, and I'm a picture hound too! ;-)

Glad you're here !

A must have for your poultry is a FIRST AID KIT for any issues that would arise. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/suggestions-for-a-first-aid-kit.1150128/)
It's definitely better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it.

Also, make sure your coop(s) have a proper amount of VENTILATION. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...-there-and-cut-more-holes-in-your-coop.47774/) Your chickens will absolutely thank you for it!

One last thing, if you're into gardening, feel free to join this years SEED SWAP (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/seed-swap.1220129/)
Thank you for the links! Very useful information. I've bookmarked some. Funny, w/ horses, dogs, sheep, and kids... minus a couple of things, I have just about all the vet stuff :) for a First Aid Kit
