Hello everyone! My family and I are gearing up to start raising chickens in our backyard! Any advice, tips, recommendations, etc... for our area/region would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any advice/support.

from WA state!

Never throw feed on the ground if they can't clean it all up immediately, as they can die from moldy feed.

I keep sand on the floor of the coop in a thinnish layer, and scrape with plastic rake - then use kitty litter scoop to get solids out. Pine shavings in nest box. I found pine shavings on the floor to be a water magnet inside the coop along the edges.

I like shed coops the best as they can get out of the rain/weather/wind if needed.
They will stand in the rain too, so rain shelters outside are good. I use free pallets elevated on concrete blocks for them to duck under.

I see you got some good advice already. Have a look at our Learning Center for some great articles on raising chickens and keeping them healthy. For more area specific tips I'd suggest you find your state thread in the Where am I? Where are you! and ask your "locals". Enjoy the site!
