Hey Everyone!

I am new with raising chickens. I will be picking up my first birds on Friday, July 18th! Excited and nervous. I am sure that I will have a lot of questions. I am starting with 2 Rhode Island Red hens-(young and just started laying), 1 Rhode Island Red cockerel and 2 ducks (type unknown). I look forward to sharing pictures and getting to know many of you in the future.

Now off to construct their temporary home. The permanent one will be built this fall.

Welcome to BYC! Just a heads up, the number of pullets to cockerels should be 10 x 1 to prevent overbreeding of the pullets. So you may need to get some more girls :)

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Remember to keep one roo for every 1-10 hens you keep.

Good luck with your chickens!! Are you getting them as chicks? They are so fun to raise. If you are wanting tame birds be sure to start right away. Handle them, cuddle them, talk to them and train them to follow you.

If you are wanting to know about what kind of ducks you get, check out these two links.

Feel free to ask any and all the questions you need to; we'd LOVE to help you!

Also, be sure to check out our learning center and coop area.

Mountain Peeps has left you with some great reading. Definitely stop by our learning center for lots of good articles on caring for your flock.

And Liz X2....that is not enough hens for your rooster. He can mate them to death and if nothing else do a lot of damage to a couple hens. So if you want to keep rooster, you will need 6 to 8 more hens. You do not need a rooster if you are only wanting eggs. Hens lay regardless and just as well without a rooster.

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! X2 on the 10 hens to 1 cockerel, otherwise your rooster will eventually keep your hens in tatters. Just post any questions you may have on the forum and I'm sure you'll get lots of answers. We are here to help in any way we can. Looking forward to seeing your pics. Good luck with your flock.

You have been given very good information by the previous respondents - unless you want fertile eggs to hatch., you don't need a rooster. Some roosters turn out to be very good flock leaders and protectors, unfortunately do not. Generally the flock will be better off without one.
