Hello from shetland

We had hurricane force winds here the other day, terrifying stuff. It can be very windy, regular force 9s and often the British top wind speed record is almost matched, sometimes beaten. In the winter we may not have a boat or plane for weeks.

The trees we've got are more like big bushes and only grown in gardens that have substantial walls that are well built and/or regularly maintained.

Last summer was superb. The dog and I were swimming in the loch or sea almost every day I had off the boat. Several friends who had stayed in Shetland for the summer were more tanned than friends that had been to Spain, USA and the likes. A few had to resort to getting out the holiday pictures to be believed they stayed. Yet this year we had an Indian summer and only 1 day at the loch which I regretted because it was too cold.

Winters are they same. When everything was at a stand still South the past 2 winters, there was only 1 day each year that I didn't dare go anywhere in the car and that was when it was thawing really fast so really slushy. In March 2006 there was so much snow in Foula that my young cousins tunnelled down the road form there house to mine and most of the fences around my house and croft were burried.

I remember doing the lambing in April with bare feet, shorts and t-shirt about 10 years ago but 2008 and 2010 there were blizzards and many lambs lost due to hypothermia.

Sounds like you have a great collection of Shetland animals! Enjoy your new birds when you get them!

I'm so happy. On Auld Yule (6th Jan) I got new Muscovies, 2 ducks and a drake. Called them Buddy, Holly and possibly Peggy Sue. I also had 9 chicks hatch. I was surprised that all 10 eggs I set were fertile at this time of year, especially with the weather we've had. Sadly one egg stopped developing at around 12 days and Rocky, the old cat who has been the so sweet with my previous broods, decided to kill the only crested and bearded blue chick. It was my fave. :( I can't wait to see if the other blue ones are pullets. Fingers crossed.

Also I had my first experience of bathing a cockerel. He loved it. Him and another roo had been fighting and this one was covered in mud and blood from head to foot. I loved how he looked when he was dry again, all foofy and bright white. I'm keeping in the house and he's gone back to his chickhood habit of roosting on the back of the sofa and my lap. He cuddles up to the dog when she's sleeping as well.
