Hi I'm Cazza. After three years of dithering we finally got a small flock of six point of lay hens about two months ago from Fenton's Poultry Farm. Their names are Juno (Speckledy), Lincoln (Rhode Rock), Ruby (Rhode Island Red), Silky (white leghorn), Thoopie (Light Sussex) and Tinkerbell (Bluebell). We all quite quickly went potty over them! The flock is now known as the "Mealworm Divas" because they love mealworms and are total divas. They have a nice new wooden henhouse with an attached run but within hours of getting them home my hubbie and middle son had fenced off our little orchard area for them so they can roam around freely under the very ancient apple trees. They also go for 'walkies' to forage in other parts of the garden. They have chicken neighbours, my tenants three hens who I call the "Basmati babes" because they love basmati rice. I make both flocks basmati rice with mealworms for supper every evening, occasionally they have pasta. My husband and son also made this flock their own mini area but they like to come out and forage for snails etc as well. egg production has been brilliant and family and friends are really enjoying them. My middle son is utterly devoted to the chucks and takes responsibility for making sure they are safely in their coops at night. he is also acting as a 'doula' to Thoopie who went broody over a fortnight ago. That was a bit of a shock and I am now desperate for advice as I have a beautiful hen in a cat basket in the orchard sitting on 12 hatching eggs. If any of them actually hatch it should be early next week and we are at odds about housing arrangements and whether the babies and Thoops should be in with the other Divas and so on. HELP! maybe I should do another post about this. I have ordered another coop ( a big one) on the assumption that some hens will hatch but I am totally confused about when/whether to move Thoopie and her brood into it and whether just to have both groups together in the orchard where they are now. Oh blimey!!!!

you may want to separate Thoopie from the others - for one thing, others hens may contribute to the egg total when she isn't around and you will have too many, for her to cover.

Once her chicks are hatched she will show them to water and feed and usually will protect them from others but, can be overwhelmed by hen assassins who may want to injure her chicks.

Wish you luck, broody hens are so much better and more convenient than incubators.
