My name is Jeanne. I have had chickens now for about 4 years. My first flock was shared with my sister at her house. We started with six day-old chicks that we purchased from the local feed store. We got 2 Barred Rock, 2 Black Astralorp, and 2 Buff Orpingtons. As it turned out, both of the Orpingtons turned out to be roosters. They went back to the feed store. Our four hens grew and began producing eggs which was exciting but we soon realized we needed more chickens if we wanted to get more eggs! I was focused on laying hens but sis wanted some pretty chickens. We bought 2 Delawares (one of which turned out to be a rooster), 4 Americaunas, a couple of Laced Wyandotts, 2 more Astralorps, a Speckled Sussex and one Buff Orpington. We were now up to 14 hens. That was a great looking flock!
I have since moved and we split the flock and I got the (ugly) laying hens and Sis kept the pretty ones. She did give me the Speckled Sussex as she kept going broody and Sis didn't know what do do with her! I'll tell you what I did if you want to know.
I've since added a few Red Sex Links and traded a couple of them to a friend for a Silver Laced Wyandotte rooster (she had bought 4 chicks and ended up with 3 roosters!) I have a mind to get some chicks if anybody will go broody again. I just bought an incubator and think I'll try it that way.
I'll let you know if it works!
