I have just joined BYC and look forward to reading through old & new posts so as to learn more about chickens. I have a small flock that produce free range eggs that I see in our area. I have some Buff Orpingtons, they are young & started laying a few weeks back. I have some younger Black Australops, the first one has started laying this week so the other girls will hopefully start soon. My more mature ladies consist of a few Rhode Islands & the majority are an indigenous breed called Boschvelders. I plan on breeding with my BO & BA 's in the future, I have a rooster of each variety. I love my chooks, they are lots of fun and really have some funny ways ! Only other chicken people understand that !! =) Great to be here, will post soon. Ciao Nadia

Hi
We live in a hamlet called Rondevlei, in the area called the Garden Route, part of the Western Cape. Only a few km from the sea. Our closest town is George.

Hi and :welcome

That's awesome that you're getting eggs now!
What do the Boschvelders look like? It's always interesting seeing breeds I haven't known before.

I hope you find all the info you need here, and enjoy the site. :D

Hi
Here are some photos. My BO Rooster is on the back stoep (verandah) with some of my hens on a cold winter day !
The Boschvelder is a cross between the South African indigenous Venda, Matabele & Ovambo chickens. They are quite relaxed and easy going, nice nature. I have known of people who got some that were not so nice ! They can be escape artists, but mine are free range & I leave them to come in to roost at dusk, it is easier than trying to get them in ! The have many colour combos, with patterns, very pretty. They lay nice creamy eggs. They are very hardy, but are not tops for laying...can tend to brood. I say that if the hens are free range or if it is just for your own use then they are great, if you have limited space & are selling eggs, probably not the best !

I live not very far from you in the Klein Karoo. I have a Boschveld hen, Baby, who lays very well, though a friend of mine has a whole flock and he's not getting that many eggs

I really like the Boschveld chickens and Baby's the sweetest hen in my flock.
