I do planning on hatching some eggs but probably not until next year. But I was thinking about the same thing about protection. I do want to let these free range from time to time. I'm a little worried about hawks around here but I doubt the rooster can do much about that.

I'm probably going to go to TSC tomorrow. I went this evening and the guy said they probably will get a shipment in tomorrow around noon.
 
You can have two flocks, quail for you and chickens for your wife. I agree roosters are not protection against hawks - apart from hopefully sounding the alarm to the hens. There are probably more roosters that turn and run away, than those that stand up to a hawk(and die anyway). Welcome to Backyard chickens. The other members have given you good advice.

Don't count on roosters protecting against hawks or owls.

They do sound a warning call if they see anything strange, but won't necessarily provide protection.
 
So I gave up on TSC. They got another shipment but it was the mixed red pullets and I really had my heart set on some specific breeds. So I ordered from Mt. Healthy Hatchery. Their limit was 10 so I ended up ordering 4 Buff Orpington Pullets, 2 Plymouth Rock pullets, 1 Brown Leghorn, and 3 Cornish Rocks (meat birds). I am hopefully going to be picking up a cockerel and pullet from a Crested Cream Legbar hatch near me. That will round out my flock with 8 layers, 1 rooster, and 3 meat birds if they all make it.

The hatchery emailed me and said they would be shipping my order on the 11th. So excited!
