hello, my name is Angela and my nick name is Jelly, I've been using this site as a source of information for a while and thought I would say hello and become more involved. We originally had 2 chickens Em and Eira, from a friend about a year ago, a musing between myself and hubi quickly became a reality. Rich built the chicken coop from recycled wood and I painted it pink much to his horror, well they are girls!! We then rehomed 2 chickens, Smudge and Rusty from freecycle. Rusty is an retired batery hen as her beak is chipped, she has now stopped laying and enjoying her retirement, she bit poorly at the mo, and is sitting beside me. Smudge, our most skittish chicken went broody a few months ago and we researched what to do and in the end purchased 6 eggs for her to brood on! She ate an egg and one got dropped, 3 did not hatch and one did, Spot who is in my pic with smudge. Rich went to get some chicks to replace the 3 eggs and came back with 5 chicks, who are now about 10 weeks old and we are waiting to see if they lay or cock - a - doodle - doo!
We think Eira and Smudge are White Sussex, Rusty is a Rhode Island Red, Em is a Plymouth Rock. Our chicks are something of a misnomer, we have Pingu who originally looked like a penguin who we think is a gorgeous mini silkie, jet black with feathery feet,
Spot we think is a White Sussex, pure white with a spot on her back, Buffy is a Buff Orpington, BlueBell a lavender orpington, but she is developing golden smudges so we may be wrong in that, Nugget a golden orpington and Hoolie is an uncertainty, Rich thinks she is a rare breed but I can't remember what he said, she is brown/black speckled.
We are trying to grow lots of vegetables and have spent ages trying to chicken proof them, rich loves woodwork and has not only built our decking from recycled scaffold planks, chicken coop but also our super king size bed from recycled end of roof trusses! I love all things crafty, making cards and gifts and organise craft and holistic fayres having just qualified as a massage therapist.
Oh well, better go and check the 2 on the lawn, last time they were out they ate my only gooseberry!! Look forward to meeting more of you online, Jelly
