(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I am a newbie. I've been reading books and mags for a few years now but never had to opportunity to make it happen until now.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? I do not have any --yet-- I'm hoping to get the coop built this Fall so I can add hens in the Spring.
(3) What breeds do you want? One of each? No, can't do that... I'm figuring on Easter Eggers at this point. I've read that they are docile and friendly (and lay pretty eggs) which are big selling points for me since my elderly mom will be helping care for them. Mom is cool with about six hens but no roosters as long as the coop is not ugly or smelly.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? I was googling for coop plans and ended up here.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? genealogy, spinning (wool), dreaming/reading about being self-sufficient
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I'm single and sharing a place with my elderly mother. We have roughly half an acre in a rural-turning-to-suburban area (1/10th of a mile down the street is the entrance to a golf-course community) that I'm hoping to transform into a mini-homestead (gardens, animals) but in a way that is attractive for mom and the neighbors. We have three dogs --two elderly and one youngster--, an elderly cat, a squater cat, and a parrotlet (I love birds). My day job is database management and information research for a subscription management company. My avocation/home-business is nutrition and wellness. Along with chickens, I hope to add small sized dairy goats and rabbits to the homestead plan.
