(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I am a newbie. I've been reading books and mags for a few years now but never had to opportunity to make it happen until now.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? I do not have any --yet-- I'm hoping to get the coop built this Fall so I can add hens in the Spring.

(3) What breeds do you want? One of each? No, can't do that... I'm figuring on Easter Eggers at this point. I've read that they are docile and friendly (and lay pretty eggs) which are big selling points for me since my elderly mom will be helping care for them. Mom is cool with about six hens but no roosters as long as the coop is not ugly or smelly.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? I was googling for coop plans and ended up here.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? genealogy, spinning (wool), dreaming/reading about being self-sufficient

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I'm single and sharing a place with my elderly mother. We have roughly half an acre in a rural-turning-to-suburban area (1/10th of a mile down the street is the entrance to a golf-course community) that I'm hoping to transform into a mini-homestead (gardens, animals) but in a way that is attractive for mom and the neighbors. We have three dogs --two elderly and one youngster--, an elderly cat, a squater cat, and a parrotlet (I love birds). My day job is database management and information research for a subscription management company. My avocation/home-business is nutrition and wellness. Along with chickens, I hope to add small sized dairy goats and rabbits to the homestead plan.

Same here! We are building our own coop. My husband is in the process of making the plans for it now, and I go out everyday to clean out a nice spot.

We would love to be self sufficient as well! Have you read the book "The Backyard homestead" by Carleen Madigan? It's great!

Anyways...

Along with gathering plans for coops, I am scouting around for someone to build (or help build) the coop. I had been leaning toward doing a chicken tractor but Mother doesn't like the idea so stationary it is... I even suggested we turn the old camper into a coop but she didn't like that either. So, camper needs a new home to make room for the coop.

Thanks for the weclome! I have not read that book yet but it sounds about what I need. I have several books on homesteading on 5 acres but now I'm faced with only 1/2 acre so the scale is much smaller. I also have a few books on permaculture which at least those principles can be scaled to small plots of land. I've been reading "Countryside" for years and recently discovered a website on urban homesteading. Since I have zero personal experience with chickens or farming, I've been trying to educate myself before I start--though the education really starts once the animals and homestead are a reality.
