Hi! I'm new here and super excited to get into raising backyard chickens! I am a registered nurse from southern Maine with a husband (teacher) and two kids (7 and 3). We have lots of animal experience: cats, dogs, degus, fish, horses...but never chickens! We were planning to wait for spring, but a local friend with chickens convinced me we could raise chicks over the cold months and have eggs in spring and summer, so we're taking the plunge!

We just set up our brooder in our spare room, with a borrowed BrinSea heater and a cat-proof brooder (borrowed from previously mentioned enabling friend, haha). We will keep them inside until they're bigger, then move them to the attached garage until they have all their feathers and are ready to move outside. Having a local craftsman build a coop for us that will be ready by Christmas, because neither my husband nor I are handy at all. Our eight chicks - two lavender Orpingtons, two cream Legbars, two olive Easter Eggers, and two "Fauvacanas" (which is apparently some kind of Americauna/Faverolle crossbreed that is supposed to be very docile and coldhardy) should arrive Tuesday!

Kids are super excited to see them grow from chick to hen, as are we! Thanks for letting me join, and I'm looking forward to continue learning about keeping chickens from all of you folks!
