Hi,
My name is Lauren and I am from Gloucester county New Jersey in a residentail area. I am married to Jim, I am a SAHM to my son Miles and fur baby Rosco. My husband and I are currently in the process of to adding a few hens to our mix. We are not total newbies to this, my husband's Granmother has a farm in Salem county and we are there frequently helping with the sheep and other animals. But we really love the chickens and other birds. MY son LOVES to feed them and just watch them. So we thought it was time to get a few of our own. My husband and I are on a quest to provide our son with healthy locally grown food. So this just makes sense to us.

As much as a wonderful and super knowledgeable resource Grandmom is to us, I am hoping to connect with other neighborhood BYC owners. I want to hear what works and what does not in South Jersey. I would also like some suggestions on what chicken would be good starter chickens for us. We want chickens for eggs to start with and only 4 max.

You should think about getting sex links. I've owned them for a few years and even with only two laying ones we always have excess eggs for our family.

And that's great your son gets to have chickens too. :p I have memories of playing with the chooks at the farm when I was a kid.
