Just popping in to say HI! We're brand new to chickens. We've gotten a variety. 6 pullets and 6 straight-run. I know we run the risk of too many roosters with the straight-runs but if that happens, we'll fatten them up and they'll become dinner when they're big enough. My family had chickens when I was little but we had a VERY aggressive rooster. I think they were leghorns - they were solid white with red combs/wattles so I'm hoping for gentler roosters.

The first 6 we got a couple weeks ago from a local farm store and we got the 6 straight-run bantams today from Cackle Hatchery (it's in the next town over - the ones from the farm store came from Cackle originally, too). The original 6 were in a box in our living room until today. My husband made a temporary coop in our garage today b/c they were getting too smelly in the house. Our garage is heated plus we have the heat lamp. I had already bought the white heat lamp before I read that red bulbs are better so I'll be getting a red one when I can. I hope the coop looks ok. I took the first pic before we put the food/water/chicks in it.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Cute little chicks! Hope all the bantams are girls for you! Not sure what the milk crates are there for? The chicks will probably be jumping up on them in a week or two and you'll need to put a lid on the brooder sooner..
