Hello, there poultry lovers. I'm here in snowy Michigan waiten for spring to get here. All my life I've dreamed of raising a small flock of chickens. As a child growing up in the city of Detroit I remember at a very very young the neighbors raising chickens and sharing theirs eggs with my faimly and I was always very fascinated with them and could't wait to be able to raise my own. Finally I've bought a place with some land on the west side of the state and I'm not a chicken owner yet, but I'm reading everything I can get my hands on so I can do it the right way and be ready when the chicks arrive home. I'm planning out the coop right now but I think it will take me all summer to build to get it the way I want it for them. So I'm planning on waiting until 2011, it's going to be hard I've waited so long and everytime I go the farm store with the chicks in the spring it breaks my heart to walk out without any. In the mean time I'm looking for experienced advice from anyone who'd like to share with a green horn. I really like this BYC site I have got a lot of info from it just from surfing around.
One thing I'm going through is how my co-workers, family and freinds think I'm crazy for wanting to raise chickens. I've heard it all but no one can understand but fellow chicken lovers. I've given up on trying to explain all I say to them now is "you won't think it's crazy when I'm passing on fresh eggs to you" and they will quiet down and stop trying to talk me out of it.
Thanks, Dee
