I am wondering if you did build your coop and how the chickens faired during the winter. we live in Timmins and have an acre of land and are contemplating building a coop......our big concern is the cold winters we get as well.

If you did build....did you add additional heat??

Did you build your Coop? And if so how did your first winter go? I live in Timmins, On and want to,have a small flock of four hens only.....I thought I could only keep them spring through fall because of our harsh winters. I would appreciate any feedback from people in the know?? We were planning on a total coop size of 8x10. A third of that actually Woulf be insulated coop (or half) The rest their hanging out area. In summer we would attach a larger run for more space for them. I had hoped with a light bulb and good insulation and straw etc....the girls would be alright....but I worry how they would be all wimter. We would get a heated water dish.....thoughts? Suggestions?.
