Hi all! I'm Suzie & I just got into chickens a few months ago. My boss intrigued me by saying he wanted chickens that layed blue & green eggs. I never knew chickens layed colorful eggs like that (just white & brown), so I did some digging & found some chicks available last Feb. I started with 12 straight run Ameraucanas (Easter Eggers). Two died early & my neighbor took 2 to breed, so I am down to 8 chickens (5 hens, 3 roosters). I also have 6 Rhode Island Reds I am raising for my friend until she builds her coop. I do plan to give her one pair of mine in exchange for one of her hens.
Being new to chickens, I was wondering if I can keep 2 roosters or will they fight? My pen is roughly 10 feet by 30 feet. The birds have lived together all their lives. I have noticed lately that the roosters seem to be going after the Reds (presumably to breed).
I would like to add some buff Orpingtons, but my chickens go after newcomers. Do I need to keep them in a pen next to each other until they get used to one another first?
Also, when will they start laying? I have them on a mixture of growth food & some scratch. I also put in some greens and alfalfa.
Thanks
