Just a quick hello from Bethel, Ohio. Looking forward to engaging in "chicken talk" with everyone. I have raised chickens basically all my life. My wife and I live on 5.5 acres. We raise a fairly large garden, w/greenhouse for starter plants. We also raise our own pork and meat chickens for the freezer. Over the last 20+ years we have had no fewer than 6 - 8 flocks of laying chickens. We live in a valley along a creek. The predator pressure is intense. Hawks, raccoons, coyotes to name a few have played havoc on our chickens. We have lost most / all of our chickens within 2-years of starting the flocks. In preparation of my retirement (18-months and counting), I recently have built the Fort Knox of chicken coops. We now are 9-months into a mixed flock of Americannas, Barred Rocks, Jersey Giants, Buff Orpingtons, all the Brahmas, Black Copper Marans and Olive eggers. A total of 24-hens.

We pride ourselves in self sustainability. We understand we cannot produce all our food, but we want/have been producing as much as we can. In the past we have raised Cornish Cross for meat chickens. We want to get away from them to produce our own dual purpose chicken. I will get into that in future posts. This is just supposed to be an introduction. So until then...thank you for allowing me a venue to talk about chickens. God Bless. Brian

Hiya, Brian, and welcome to BYC! :frow

That is a gorgeous coop you've built!!

If you ever wanted to, you could type up an article explaining how you built it and post it in our Coop forum. We have an "always running" Coop article contest too you could enter it in if you do.

We're glad you're here!

Thank you for the nice comments. After I finish my research on "best dual purpose" breed to sustainably raise for my family, I will comment further on the coop. My daughter got married last year. She asked me to build her some kind of archway or backdrop for her to get married in front of. Her and her husband are huge Lord of the Rings fans, so I recreated the front of Bilbo Baggins house. I threatened them if they did not take the Bilbo house home with them, I would turn it into a grandchild clubhouse / chicken coop. That is what ended up happening. I am not even close to being done with it.
