I’m new to this hobby but I believe at my age that God intended Michael to be in my life.
Thanksgiving 2019 is when Michael arrived at my humble rental trailer in a vegetable crate. A friend of mine called and asked me if I wanted a chicken because she didn’t want to go through the slaughtering and plucking etc. I said bring it by and I’ll find it a home.
Afrer a brief chit chat, she left and I looked at the crate. Two greenish black feathers were poking out of the crate, and my beagle mix Missy was smelling and then sort of sucking on them. The crate was spooky quiet. After a little while I decided,”Well what the heck let’s see what’s inside.” I undid the wire loops, raised the lid and stood back. A young black rooster stood up and looked around like a prince would at his new kingdom. With much grace, he raised one foot, then the other and stepped out of the crate. He was not intimidated nor did he try to attack anybody, but instead strutted over to the dog food and helped himself to the kibble and water. I instantly named him Michael after my brother and the archangel.
From there I have become a crazy chicken lady: I am in love with my bird. He will climb up in my shoulder if I sleep late and stare at me these days, but the quickest way he got me out of bed was when he grabbed my pinkie toe! He was hard to house train, but I started with puppy pads and vinyl table cloths over everything and now he understands and doesn’t pop everywhere but in two spots, and I will bring all if that down to one.
He is a house chicken. He keeps the cat and dog in line but I think he mated with the cat because he coos to her and she won’t have it.
I have many questions about Michael. I think that he might be an Astralorpe. He is now growing spurs and about six pounds.
I am blessed with this amazing creature and I am needing tips on how to get him vaccinated and a good design for an inside the house structure for himself and eventually two hens, with an outside sort of tunnel that would come under the front door deck That is surrounded with lattice but for one spot and safe. He is roosting in the bathroom and likes it there because he can watch the door and the mirror.
what sort of mate should I get him? One or two? How am I going to take care of him his entire life if I am a renter? Will I find a permanent place for us all? Why isnt God telling me how to handle this?
many more questions.
Thank You for reading this!
