Starting a new life can be tricky at any age, and it doesn't get easier when you are knocking on the door of the big 60 as I am tomorrow. However I am off to a good start - left my lifetime as a New Yorker behind and have put down new roots in central Gulf coast Florida with a dear friend who is also starting over. She has had a bit of experience with a back yard flock, though it ended badly (hawks and foxes and fishers, oh my!

).

However, since we are now in a new climate and surroundings (a lovely 2 1/2 acre mini-homestead) I decided to read up on all I could find out about caring for a flock before we actually get our first peeps. Did the same thing about gardening - a lifetime of experience had to be largely discarded in favor of a whole new set of methods and processes because this sure isn't the Catskills!

So I will mostly be reading and learning all I can at first. Later when I have a little better understanding I'll start asking questions. Eventually I hope to share pictures and stories of my own, but for their own health and safety I want to know what I am doing before we buy the birds

Welcome to BYC! Congratulations on reaching (almost) 60. I will be there very shortly myself. You are very wise to learn as much as possible before buying your birds. It will keep you from making a lot of mistakes later on. You will find lots of useful information on this site and if you have any questions, just post them on the forum and I'm sure you will get lots of replies. Good luck in your new environment.

Good morning from Southern Illinois (between Centralia and Mt. Vernon) Presently, I have Buff Orphington pullets which my sister bought for me. I have a Buff Minorca rooster which survived the massacre. Presently my husband is improving my coop so I will have no further tragedies.
