Hello from Texas

I am from just southeast of Austin. I have no chicks yet. I am using this and other sites to do my research ahead of time and also to figure out how to keep my beagles from making lunch of my chicks. I am thinking of some barred rocks for both eggs and eventually meat. As my husband and I are pretty handy, I will be building my own coop, but will mostly free range my peeps. Winter does not get very cold here so mostly have to worry about keeping the girls dry. I will probably ask a lot of questions as I want to ready when I get my chicks.

Best of luck with getting everything ready!
We free range our chickens and they don't seem to mind rain. If they want to, they'll go back into their coop to take shelter, but they usually just ride it out and then dry off afterwards.
