I'm completely new to this and I'm trying to figure out where to start. My husband and I were going to wait till we moved and got some land before starting chicken but that is realistically going to be a while off. So I'm making the most of our current place. I started a garden this year and since we eat an insane number of eggs I'm thinking chickens would be great! I also want my kids to grow up in that environment. I'm really excite. I would like to start off small and go from there. I have 2 boys 18 months and 3 years, 3 dogs and a cat. Our house is a bit nuts and we don't fit in in suburbia at all so what's a few chickens?

Welcome to BYC!

You will want to start in our learning center. Lots of good articles on getting started with chickens, building the coop, raising the chicks and keeping your adult flock happy and healthy...

For some coop ideas, stop by our coops pages for lots of great ideas from our members. Some of these coops are very easy to follow and some even have plans to go from...

As for breeds, there are lots of nice breeds out there that make good pets as well. Take a look at these 2 breeds pages for some quick info on the breeds and their attributes...

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! TwoCrows gave you some great links to check out and get started with. You may also want to check out your state thread for chicken keeping neighbors https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/44/texas Do double check that chickens are allowed in your city / HOA or if you need to keep them on the quiet.

Welcome to BYC! You've received some good advice here. My recommendation is to make sure the coop/run is secure and you use 1/4 inch hardware cloth (very strong mesh wire)instead of chicken wire to make sure the chickens are safe from the dogs. Good luck to you ;)

That's y'all. I am doing as much reading as possible and checking out all the links. Chickens are allowed within the city limits and we are not part of an HOA and several people in the neighborhood have chickens. I'm surprised how common it is. My biggest concern is having the right amount of room and keeping the costs down. Than you again for the suggestions.
