GardenIslandChickens
In the Brooder
Hello all!
I've been a constant visitor to this website for years as I planned and waited for a time I could get chicks of my own! Recently made the move to Kaua'i and while there are a ton of wild chickens roaming around, I've been waiting to get some domesticated chickens! I just got 9 little babies in the mail and am super excited to get started.
My 9 chicks came from a small local hatchery on Big Island and are some mix of Welsummer, Bielefelder, 55 Flowery Hen, Olive Egger, one Blue Birchen Marans, and one Blue Laced Red Wyandotte. The Olive Egger and Blue Birchen are obvious standouts and I think I know which one is the Wyandotte, but the other 6 have very similar color patterns- I feel like I can see differences between them but have no clue what breed is what!
Currently working on their coop, I think my biggest issues will be making sure the wild chickens stay out of it! The biggest predators here are cats, rats, and maybe if the neighbors dog gets out! Definitely taking a lot of inspiration from a variety of coops here, while adapting for the hot/humid climate here. I'll try and take some progress pics, my construction knowledge is exactly zero so it will probably end up pretty wonky. Luckily, since there aren't many predators here I won't need to make sure everything is super locked up, etc.
Excited to start sharing from the Garden Island!
