My daughter's household adopted 5 chickens last year. They have lost some and added some when the chickens (all adults) were free ranging. My 12 year old asked for chickens for her birthday so we received 16 cuties and 15 survived so we now have 18 total. As we have foxes and hawks, they are no longer allowed our. The babies (now 12 weeks) and the "girls" are wonderful. They love my son-in-law and granddaughter..and me when I visit them with treats!!

I love this site and visit it often but joined today.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Have you visited the Learning Center? It's a great first step in chicken education. You may also want to check out the coops section and predator threads to find the best way to protect the flock against hawks, fox etc. Unfortunately everything loves chicken and they would rather eat free birds than stand in line at KFC.

Hi, welcome to BYC!
That's awesome that your 12 yo asked for chickens. That's the age that I really got into them. It really teaches you responsibility and kindness!
