I just got my chickens about a month ago and they're doing well. I have 10 High Production Red pullets about 10 weeks old and one rooster I named "Daddy'O of the same breed but a few weeks older. He is apart from his future harem until they get bigger and older. This breed is supposed to have large brown eggs.
When I retired I wanted out of town so I could have chickens again. I haven't had any in 20 years so this means a lot to me. I'm not sure my hubby agrees with me but at least he's tolerant as long as I do all the work.
It's a challenge raising them in the desert like this because you not only have to take into consideration the heat in summer and the cold nights in winter but they need protection from the eternal wind, and predators like hawks, bobcats, and coyotes. I really thought out what I wanted in a hen house and pen and my son helped me build it when he came to visit.
I saw the website for Backyard Chickens when I was looking for coop designs and anything on chickens. I think it's really neat. There's a lot of knowledge in reading all the posts.
About myself? I feed all the birds and there are a lot of hummingbirds at the feeders. I read a lot, sew and quilt, crochet and knit and I love my garden. Some people say you can't grow things in the desert but my irises and roses and trees are lovely although we've only been here 3 years. I work part time for a helicopter magazine that is published locally.
I look forward to chatting with a lot of people about chickens and whatever as I learn how to get around in the website. Betty
