Hello from the Midwest!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens @LizzyRose great to have you join us curious what state are you in that the rental is happening
Rent the Chicken is pretty much nationwide. I live in Indiana and my super knowledgeable chicken lady lives only about 20 minutes away. (Also she said she’d watch my hens at her place if I took an extended summer trip.) There are other rental groups popping up I see online. I have not checked them out, as I feel pretty loyal to Rent the Chicken. (BTW the rental price includes feed for 6 months, wood shavings, oyster shell, chubby mealworms, and hanging feeders and waterers) But still the price is a consideration.

Welcome to our FUNomenal community! :frow
I have never heard about chicken rental programs....! That’s pretty neat! I used to lease a horse before my husband built me a barn and then purchased our own horse/s.
Best wishes and have lots of fun! :ya
Wow! Good for your husband! I’ve heard of ‘chicken math’, do you have to watch out for ‘horse math’? LOL. My former daughter in law who still remains a close friend absolutely has to have a horse. She doesn’t have a lot of money so she exchanges chores with various barns to earn her horse’s keep. She plays a series of some kind of ‘games’ to challenge her horse’s minds. She has a rescue horse that is now absolutely beautiful. The horse watches her closely when she shows up as he loves the ‘games’ they play together. One horse she had was so gentle it was able to be involved in a program for autistic kids. I’ll have to tell her there is such a thing as horse rental. Have a great evening.

Yes it does! The boy in my avatar is my current one. He is blue and his name is Ben.
I've been rescuing Dobermans since 1996.
He is beautiful! Is the blue color similar to a Weimaraner’s color?
I ran into a man with a Dobe at PetSmart the other day. She was gorgeous and had the personality of a goofy Lab. I bet you see some sad things as a rescue lady. There is a lady in our town who helps homeless persons with food and vet care for their pets. When the homeless persons decide to enter a Shelter for awhile because of inclement weather she takes their pets home temporarily as the Shelters don’t allow animals. Her house is a melee of critters. I asked her what cats did. She said they hide under the beds for a few days till they decide to join the pack! Pets mean so much to many of the homeless.

Sorry about your losses. I had an Australorp last summer, and the other hen was an Australorp/Leghorn cross, Boy was she bossy! I heard Australorps suffer in the heat, so the Leghorn/Austro mix hen must have been trying to help the other one stay cool by pulling her back feathers out!

I also have an Australorp hen in my flock who is extremely bossy. She will rip the Red Sex Link's feathers out for no apparent reason. I really don't understand her aggressive behavior, she has been raised around the others for 2 years since they were chicks. Anyway, except for the Australorps, my flock is composed of 9 different breeds and all of the rest get along wonderful.
